Philip Morris Polska Distribution Sp. z o.o., a subsidiary of Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI), announced the completion of an investment worth nearly PLN 1 billion in the modernization of its factory in Krakow. This is where the inserts for the latest tobacco heating system, which is currently being sold in Poland, are manufactured.
- The modernization of the PMI factory in Kraków included, among others, the construction of new lines for the production of tobacco inserts for heating in IQOS ILUMA devices, including the latest generation – IQOS ILUMA i, which PMI is currently introducing to Poland.
- The cartridges produced in Kraków are already available on the Polish and international markets – they are exported to EU countries and Asia, including Japan, where the global premiere of IQOS devices took place in 2014.
- Tobacco from Polish crops is used to produce the inserts.
- The investment in Kraków allowed the creation of over 300 new jobs.
Philip Morris International on phasing out cigarette production
In 2016, PMI was the first and still the only company in the tobacco industry to announce a phase-out of cigarette production, focusing on creating smoke-free products with the potential to reduce the risk compared to continued smoking:
- We are extinguishing cigarettes on a global scale and we are doing it the fastest in the entire tobacco industry. Since the introduction of IQOS, we have reduced the volume of cigarettes we introduce to the global market by 28%. Now our factory in Krakow joins the group of plants at the forefront of our global transformation. From a cigarette manufacturer, we are becoming a company creating smokeless products - says Michał Mierzejewski, President of Philip Morris International for the North-Eastern Europe region.
He added: "We are one of the largest American investors in Poland. We have invested over PLN 27 billion here. We are the largest taxpayer and employer in our industry. We employ over 7,000 people in the country. We focus on Poles: Poles are the most numerous European nation in the global structures of the company, and every 12th manager employed at PMI has a Polish passport. Finally, it is the innovative solutions of Polish engineers from Radom and the pioneering research of Polish scientists that have made the smokeless transformation of our business gain a new pace," explains Michał Mierzejewski.
New heated tobacco inserts from PMI and cooperation with Polish engineers
As the company emphasizes, the development of tobacco inserts for heating in IQOS was possible thanks to the cooperation of PMI with Polish engineers from the company International Tobacco Machinery (ITM) based in Radom, who created modern machines for the production of a new type of products. It is thanks to the cooperation with PMI and other companies in the industry that the Radom ITM has been the national leader in the number of patents obtained for years.
PMI has invested more than $14 billion in research, technology development, and commercialization of smoke-free products that provide a less harmful alternative to continued smoking. To this end, the company employs approximately 1,500 scientists, engineers, and specialists in various fields. PMI smoke-free products are currently available in 95 markets worldwide and have more than 500 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals.
– Our direction is clear: we are moving away from cigarettes as quickly as possible. We are becoming a company driven by new technologies. We are not only the largest taxpayer in the tobacco industry in Poland. Every year, we pay more CIT in Poland than leading global technology corporations. IQOS is a breakthrough technology that has given the tobacco industry the impulse to change. That is why the history of this industry can be divided into the years “before” and “after” IQOS – says Can Kuterdem, President of the Management Board and Managing Director of Philip Morris Poland.
He added: "IQOS is the most frequently purchased tobacco heater in the world[1]. Although it is not risk-free, thanks to it, approximately 30.8 million smokers have already decided to give up cigarettes and choose a better alternative to continuing to smoke. Nearly 40% of PMI's global net revenue comes from smokeless products. We want this proportion to increase to 2/3 by 2030. Now we are introducing IQOS ILUMA i, our most modern tobacco heating system, to Poland."
What are the characteristics of the IQOS ILUMA i system?
IQOS ILUMA i is the latest generation of PMI's flagship tobacco heating system, using SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM™ technology. The device heats the tobacco insert using induction, without a heating blade. During the process, there is no combustion of tobacco or smoke.
IQOS ILUMA i is equipped with a touch screen and innovative features such as the pause function (allowing you to interrupt and resume a heating session) and the FlexPuff function (adjusting the length of the session to the individual consumer's usage pattern). In turn, the new FlexBattery function in Eco mode optimizes the battery life of the device's portable charger.
– The PMI factory in Krakow, as one of our three factories in the world, currently produces two types of tobacco heater inserts. One is intended for the IQOS ILUMA tobacco heaters, with the Polish market in mind, but also for European and Asian markets, such as Japan. We also supply the Ukrainian market. The second type is inserts for BONDS tobacco heaters, targeted mainly at adult users of tobacco products in countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia – explains Carlo Serpentino, Managing Director of the Krakow factory of Philip Morris Polska SA
He added: "Our investment in Krakow has allowed us to create over 300 new, specialized jobs in the factory, including 285 experts and high-class specialists – engineers, mechanics and operators. Our new production lines are capable of producing up to 11 billion heated tobacco sticks per year."
IQOS ILUMA i goes on sale in Poland in two variants: IQOS ILUMA i and IQOS ILUMA i PRIME. The devices are aimed exclusively at adult smokers or users of nicotine products. As the company emphasizes, "IQOS is not a risk-free product and delivers nicotine, which is addictive. The device is aimed exclusively at adults who would otherwise continue to smoke cigarettes or use other nicotine products."
